Bikepacking: Tips, Gear, and Inspiration
Unlike traditional touring, bikepacking embraces a minimalist approach, allowing cyclists to explore remote areas with little more than what they can carry on their bikes. Sound fun? Let’s dive into some tips and gear essentials to make sure your bikepacking adventure is an epic one!
But first, let’s rewind a little …
So, what is bikepacking? At its core, bikepacking is about exploring the world on two wheels while carrying only the essentials for survival and comfort. And unlike traditional bike touring, which involves paved roads and support vehicles, bikepacking ventures off-road, onto gravel paths, forest trails, and mountain passes. This minimalist approach to travel allows you to fully immerse yourself in your surroundings and of course, puts a big fat tick in the adventure box!
Why we love it …
One of the greatest benefits of bikepacking is the freedom it offers to explore remote and off-the-beaten-path destinations that can’t be reached by car or traditional touring bike. Whether it's winding through remote mountain passes, crossing desert landscapes, or camping under the stars in a secluded forest, bikepacking opens up a world of possibilities for those of you who love an adventure.
And beyond the physical challenges, bikepacking is also a great mental workout, testing skills such as self-reliance and resilience as you figure out how to navigate obstacles and adapt to the changing - and often unpredictable - conditions. It’s also a whole lot of fun, full of the simple pleasures of being out in the open and on the road!
So, on to our top tips …
Gear Essentials
When it comes to gear for bikepacking, every ounce counts. Lightweight, durable, and multi-functional gear is essential for maximising comfort and efficiency on the trail. Start with a bikepacking-specific bike, designed to handle off-road terrain and equipped with mounts for carrying gear. Invest in a quality set of bikepacking bags, including a frame bag, seat pack, handlebar roll, and top tube bag, to distribute weight evenly and securely on your bike. Other essential gear includes a lightweight tent or bivy sack, a sleeping bag or quilt, a compact stove for cooking meals, and clothing suitable for all weather conditions.
Packing Tips
Packing efficiently is possibly the most important thing to a successful bikepacking trip. Start by making a detailed packing list and laying out all your gear before you start loading up your bike. Organise your gear into categories such as shelter, sleep system, cooking, clothing, and tools, and pack them strategically to distribute weight evenly and keep your bike balanced. Aim to pack as light as possible without sacrificing safety or comfort, and be ruthless about leaving behind non-essential items. Remember that space is limited, so prioritise multi-functional gear and pack items that serve multiple purposes whenever possible. Easier said then done, we know!
Route Planning
Choosing the right route is crucial for a successful bikepacking adventure. Consider factors such as terrain, distance, elevation gain, water sources, camping options, and points of interest when planning your route. Look for established bikepacking routes or trails in the area, or get creative and design your own route using maps, GPS devices, and other online sources. Don't be afraid to venture off the beaten path and explore less well-known trails and backcountry roads, but be sure to research trail conditions and regulations before you go!
Safety and Preparation
Safety is, of course, a top priority when bikepacking, especially when venturing into remote areas or rugged terrain. Be prepared for emergencies by carrying essential safety gear such as a first-aid kit, repair tools, spare parts, and navigation aids. Make sure you know basic bike maintenance and repair, and carry out a thorough bike check before setting out on your trip. And always practice responsible outdoor ethics, including Leave No Trace principles, and respect wildlife and natural habitats along the way. The final tip is to always let someone know your intended route and expected return time.
