Cycling Holidays: Unforgettable Experiences
We’re biased, we know, but cycling holidays offer a wonderfully perfect blend of adventure, fun, challenges and, of course, a chance for a bit of R&R! So, with summer just around the corner, we delve into the essentials of planning and preparing for a cycling holiday as well as for making the most of your time on two wheels.
Choosing the Destination.
- Research different cycling destinations in terms of difficulty, terrain and also the cultural experiences. And align this with not only your fitness and capability levels but also with the kind of cycling holiday you’re looking for, be that a challenging adventure or a more leisurely getaway.
- Consider the climate and weather conditions for when you’re looking to visit, not only in the area itself, but also along any key cycling routes. Are they high in the mountains and maybe colder than the general climate or maybe exposed roads and paths in direct sunlight … just so you can pack correctly and be prepared.
- Look into the cycling infrastructure such as bike lanes, cycling-friendly accommodation and bike rental services – more on this later!
Decide the Duration.
- Assess the amount of time you can want to allocate to the holiday. Things like fitness levels and the area you’re interested in will play a big part in deciding how long you want your holiday to be.
- When planning the trip, think about the distance you can comfortably cover each day, taking into account any elevation gains or challenging terrain.
- Factor in rest days and non-cycling activities to avoid burnout and to take some time to explore the local area.
Bike Rental or Bring Your Own.
- Research the local bike rental companies and check for reviews on the website or on social media, to get a feel for service and whether the company is reputable.
- Make sure that the rental company provides well-maintained bikes and that they have the type of bike you need for your trip. And don’t forget to check for any accessories you might need.
- If you’re bringing your own bike, then check with the airline for any transportation regulations, and invest in a sturdy travel case for protection.
Plan Your Itinerary.
- Plan a general route with daily distances, taking into account factors like elevation changes, available accommodation and the surrounding area … and don’t forget to check daylight hours!
- Research and plan in stops at local attractions, great viewpoints and places for a food and drink pitstops.
- Leave room for the flexibility to accommodate unexpected discoveries or changes in your plans! It’s all part of the cycling adventure!
Accommodation.
- Be sure to check that any accommodation you book caters to cyclists.
- And it’s important to check if the hotels or guesthouses offer secure bike storage and laundry facilities.
- Arrange for luggage transfers if necessary to lighten your load during the rides.
Gear & Supplies.
- When it comes to the gear you need, prepare as you would for a ride at home; a repair kit, spare inner tubes, multi-tool, tire pump, and a first aid kit. And don’t forget safety gear, such as a helmet, reflective clothing, and lights for riding at night, or in case you get caught out.
- Pack for the weather and think about any specific rides that may take you away from the general climate of the area, or leave you exposed to the elements!
- Invest in a comfortable pair of cycling shorts, gloves, and suitable footwear for long rides. And a pannier or saddle bags are worth considering to carry your belongings or even just the important stuff you need to carry around with you – which will be more than you probably need at home.
Navigation & Communication.
- Go old school and check a physical map as well as taking a GPS navigation device with you on your cycling routes.
- Download cycling apps or use your GPS device to track your progress and also help you find any nearby services you might need … or to help spot any unexpected little ‘surprise & delight’ stops!
- Carry a fully charged mobile phone and make sure you take a backup power source!
- And check the local traffic and cycling rules so as you don’t end up on the wrong side of the law … or the road!
And with that, the only other thing to add is to enjoy the ride!
Pace yourself and make sure to not get too caught up that you forget to take a pit-stop to enjoy the local food and take in the scenery, atmosphere and local culture. And embrace the challenges! Cycling holidays will also throw a couple of curve balls your way but this is all part of the adventure and the magic behind creating truly memorable experiences!
One last important tip, make sure you have the necessary insurance coverage for both you and your bike and equipment.
